8 Thanksgiving Dinner Tips This Season

Posted: 20.10.07

Now that Thanksgiving weekend is just around the corner, why not take advantage of a few time-saving tips so you can enjoy the long weekend! Here are a few ways to make your Thanksgiving meal easier and to celebrate safely!

1. Make a Menu And Stick to It

There are lots of great recipes that you can add to your menu a few days before the big day or as you’re cooking, but don’t do it. Decide on your menu in advance, what you’re going to ask others to bring, and forget the rest. This will save you time and headaches so you can enjoy the celebration too!

2. Be Prepared. Be Safe.

Having the table or seating area set before guests arrive gives you time to chat and make them feel welcome. Also, having assigned seating encourages guests to sit apart safely during this holiday season. Opting out of a buffet-style meal, serving food on individual plates, not sharing utensils, keeping groups small in size, and being meticulous about handwashing and wearing masks (when needed) can all help to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

3. Prepare Drinks Beforehand

Nothing is more welcoming than being offered a drink when you arrive for a celebration. Just prep in advance. Preparing a big-batch punch or cocktail that will last the evening, freeing you up to do other things, is a great way to go!  Another good tip? To keep glasses and cups from getting mixed up amongst guests, use a washable marker and label each drink with your guest's name.

4. Freeze-a-Pie

Make your peach, pumpkin, and sweet potato pies early, then freeze. Thaw the night before and you’re done! It’s that simple.

5. Stale (Or Toasted) Bread = A Better Dressing

Try using stale bread or toasted bread for your dressing. It works! Making your dressing even more delicious! Buy a loaf of bread a few days in advance and leave it out, or toast your bread to help wick out the moisture. Don’t worry about it being too dry, you can always put more moisture back in when you mix, before baking.

6. Keep Kids Busy

Thanksgiving is an exciting time for the little ones. They want to help, participate and do something! So be prepared. Plan and organize fun activities for them to do while you prep for dinner. Crafts, games (indoors and outdoors) and easy chores are always helpful to keep them happy and busy.

7. Wash Potatoes in Bulk

Rather than washing your potatoes by hand, run them through the dishwasher. No kidding! Place your dirty potatoes on the top rack of an empty dishwasher and set it to the rinse-only cycle. Make sure there's no soap! Turn it on, walk away and come back to squeaky clean taters and no mess.

8. Enjoy Yourself

Most importantly, make a plate for yourself and eat! Don't spend the meal running back and forth to the kitchen and end up missing out on the Thanksgiving feast you've created.

Whatever your plans this weekend, we wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving from the team at Hawks Landing!
